For one standard cocktail, fill the shaker body about two-thirds with cold, solid ice. But treat that level as a visual shortcut, not a scientific optimum. The real target is enough ice to move the drink out of the too-little-ice range, with enough empty space for the ice and liquid to travel.
My quickest check is the sound. A good load moves from end to end with a full, controlled thump. A thin, splashy rattle usually means too little ice. A shaker that feels like a solid frozen block is packed too tightly.
Two-Thirds Is a Shortcut, Not the Correct Answer
Difford's Guide recommends filling a shaker two-thirds with fresh ice, and it is a useful starting point at home. It normally gives a single cocktail enough cold mass without taking away all the working space inside the tin.
It is not a universal fill line. Two-thirds of a small cobbler shaker and two-thirds of a large Boston tin do not hold the same amount of ice. Cube size, recipe volume, and the condition of the ice also change the load. That is why I would remember the principle rather than the fraction: enough cold ice, plus enough movement space.

More Ice Stops Making a Big Difference Once You Have Enough
The most common home-bar mistake is using only a few cubes to avoid dilution. Those cubes warm quickly, while the drink may still need more chilling. Adding ice is helpful at this stage because the shaker is still below what I call the enough-ice threshold.
Once the shaker contains enough ice to chill the measured drink efficiently, adding more does not make the cocktail proportionally colder or more diluted. Dave Arnold's shaking experiments found a practical plateau: too little ice performs poorly, but the benefit of additional ice levels off after there is enough. There is no universal cube count because cube size, ice temperature, shaker size, and drink volume vary.
This explains why two-thirds works so often. For a normal single cocktail, it usually clears the too-little-ice range while leaving room to shake. Filling the tin solid offers little advantage if the contents can no longer travel.
Wet Ice Can Dilute Your Cocktail Before You Even Shake It
Not all of the water in a finished cocktail comes from ice melting during the shake. Liquid water already clinging to the cubes enters the drink as soon as the ice is added.
Dry freezer ice, wet ice from a bowl or ice bin, and partially melted ice can produce different results even when they occupy roughly the same volume. Wet ice begins with extra water on its surface. Soft, collapsing cubes also give you less dependable chilling capacity than hard, freshly removed cubes.

This is why I pay more attention to the condition of the ice than to an exact cube count. Use fresh, solid cubes when possible. If the ice is sitting in visible water, drain it rather than scooping that water into the shaker. Add the ice last, seal the shaker, and start shaking instead of leaving the drink to stand.
Crushed or cracked ice is often said to cause more dilution simply because it has more surface area. Surface area certainly changes how quickly heat moves, but wet surface water can make that comparison misleading. For a repeatable baseline, use solid medium cubes and reserve crushed ice for recipes that specifically call for it.
Use Movement and Sound Instead of Counting Cubes
Home ice trays make cube-count rules unreliable. Six compact refrigerator cubes and six large tray cubes are not the same load. Check what the shaker is doing instead:
- Too little: Liquid sloshes around a few sharp clicks, and the shaker feels light.
- Enough ice with working space: The load travels end to end with a strong, controlled sound.
- Packed too tightly: The contents barely move, or the shaker becomes difficult to close without force.
I would aim for the middle condition. The ice needs room to pass through the liquid; it does not need a large empty chamber, but it should not be locked in place. Calibrate With One Drink Before You Double It
- Measure one complete cocktail into the shaker body.
- Add fresh, solid ice to about the two-thirds level.
- Check that the shaker closes easily and the load can travel.
- Shake with a full end-to-end motion, then strain immediately.
- Taste the drink before changing the ice load on the next round.
One drink gives you a clean baseline for that shaker and your usual ice. If a double recipe leaves no movement space or makes the seal difficult, split it into two rounds. I would rather repeat a controlled single shake than reduce the ice just to make two drinks fit.

Use Fresh Ice in the Serving Glass
If the cocktail is served on the rocks, strain it over fresh ice. Shaker ice has already done its job: it has warmed, chipped, and contributed dilution. Reusing it in the glass makes the drink less consistent and carries small fragments into the serve.

For an up drink, strain and discard the shaker ice. For a rocks drink, prepare the serving glass separately. Mixing ice and serving ice have different jobs.
Choose Working Space, Not Just Listed Capacity
A shaker needs room for the measured drink, enough ice, and movement after it is closed. That usable working space matters more than the largest capacity number printed on a product page.
